What you must be able to do
By the end of Lesson 1 you can greet people and say goodbye, introduce yourself and others, ask for and give names (informal du / formal Sie), spell your name (das Alphabet), say where you come from and where you live, talk about the languages you speak, use the verb sein and regular present-tense verbs, ask W-questions and yes/no questions, use the articles der / das / die, and count from 0 to 20.
